5 Errors to Avoid in SEO

May 7th, 2009

Creating your website is a rewarding task.  You feel as though you are accomplishing something regarding your business, by furthering it, and finally stepping into the new millennium.  Of course you may also be looking for new ideas to enhance the website you already have.  Whatever your reasons for searching out information, we have it here for you.  There are 5 errors you could make when creating your website and using SEO.  It is imperative that you understand them and avoid them.

  1. Code is something you use to create the website.  For example robots.txt is a type of code.  However, robots.txt is a code you do not want.  It can hinder a spider from moving through your site successfully, thus you do not get indexed properly.  A code that looks invalid throws off the little spiders.
  2. Spiders, if you do not know the term, are web crawlers working off maths equations to figure out what to index in the search engine database.  There are many ways you can trip them up.  Code as we mentioned above is just one option.  Another problem is creating a barrier such as JavaScript.  It takes longer to load, as well as throws the spider around the site.  HTML is the best option in this case.
  3. Keywords that you use can be important.  We all tend to go for the winning keywords, the words that get the most play from online users.  Unfortunately this can lead to oversight.  You might be missing keywords that may not be in the top 20, but could certainly help your cause.  Do not ignore misspellings, synonyms, phrases, or a slightly different word that is not as popular.  Sometimes this is where you get the top rankings.
  4. Meta information such as titles is something you need to work on.  Often times web designers not versed in SEO overlook what can be most helpful.  A homepage should have a title, not just be called Homepage.  This is another area you can use keywords.  A meta description is another option for keyword use.  Tags should be no more than 128 characters, and descriptions need to be 30 words at most.
  5. Above all, remember the goal of the website!! SEO can only get you so far.  If the consumer finds an unfriendly site laden with SEO you will not get the results you want.  Go for a user friendly site with pertinent information.

Density Of Keywords

February 6th, 2009

The density of keywords is an indicator of the number of times the selected keyword appears in the web page. But mind you, keywords should not be used, but should be just enough to appear at important places.

If you repeat the keywords in every other word on every line, your site will probably be rejected as an artificial site or spam site.

The density of keywords is always expressed as a percentage of all words of content on a web page.

Suppose you have 100 words on your web page (not including HMTL code used for writing the web page), and you use a keyword for five times in the content. The density of keywords on this page is obtained by simply dividing the total number of keywords, by the total number of words that appear on your web page. So here it is 5 divided by 100 = .05. Because keyword density is a percentage of total words on the page, above multiplied by 100, which is 0.05 x 100 = 5%

The accepted standard for a keyword density is between 3% and 5%, to get recognized by search engines, and you should not exceed.

Remember that this rule applies to each page of your site. It also applies to not only a keyword, but also a set of keywords that relates to another product or service. The density of keywords should always be between 3% and 5%.

Simple steps to check the density:
• Copy and paste the contents of the web page of an individual in a word processing program like Word or Word Perfect.
• Go to the Edit menu and click on “Select All”. Now go to the Tools menu and select “Word Count”. Note the total number of words in the page.
• Now, select “Search” function on the Edit menu. Go to the “Replace” in the tab and type the keyword you are looking for. ‘Replace’ that word with the same word, so you do not change the text.
• When you finish replacing the function, the system will provide a number of words you replaced. This gives the number of times you used the keyword in this page.
• Using all the words on the page and the total number of keywords you can now calculate the density of keywords.
